Our History

Founded in 1977 by Howard Benson, NCDS is the leading, most experienced provider of fundraising campaigns for chambers of commerce, economic and community development organizations across the United States.  NCDS pioneered the multi-year strategic initiative funding model, which has become the preferred approach for public-private economic development programming.

ground breakingOur project management teams relieve staff and volunteers from the most time demanding and unpleasant fundraising tasks, and our in-house Economic Strategy Center produces compelling Return-on-Investment data and analysis for all NCDS campaigns.  Our MaxFund® methodology significantly shortens the typical campaign timeline, and is preferred by volunteers and staff for its strategic (but limited) use of their time and effort.

NCDS’ approach and effectiveness in its core market has stimulated demand from business and community leaders to manage campaigns for other non-profits in their communities.  As a result, many NCDS campaigns fund projects and programs for arts & culture, education, youth development, social services, and community improvement.  The majority of NCDS’ engagements are for local or regional organizations (or local affiliates of national organizations) and our campaigns assemble local leaders in securing support from corporate, individual, foundation, and public sources within the community/region.

“Birmingham Landmarks, Inc. certainly made the right decision in selecting NCDS to raise the $7 million needed to fully restore our sadly dilapidated and abandoned former vaudeville theatre in downtown Birmingham.  Your firm provided the wisdom and experience to position the project as worthy of support, then structured a winning campaign that was creative, energizing, and relentless in pursuit of the goal.  We were especially appreciative of your flexibility relative to our early cash flow issues, and even more so in the selection of the assigned NCDS Project Executive.  Because of the success and momentum of your phase of this exceptional campaign, the Lyric staff was able to continue seeking commitments utilizing tax credits, and the total raised now exceeds $11.8 million.  Thanks to NCDS, Birmingham can boast of having one of the most spectacularly restored performing arts theaters in America.”
