About NCDS

National Community Development Services (NCDS) is America's leader in campaign fundraising for chambers of commerce and economic development organizations.

NCDS secures the financial resources that allow community and economic development organizations to fulfill their missions, increase their impact and value, and make their communities better places to live, work, and start or grow businesses. Our fundraising campaigns succeed because we do far more than simply ask constituents for financial support.

Founded in 1977 by Howard Benson, NCDS pioneered the multi-year strategic initiative approach that remains the industry standard for increasing organizational relevance, capacity, and economic impact. We've raised over $1.8 billion in communities of all sizes, from a few thousand people to several million.

5 STEPS TO
INCREASE REVENUE &
RELEVANCY
image
Step 1: Your Vision
IDENTIFY THE CHALLENGES OR OPPORTUNITIES FACING YOUR COMMUNITY
  • It all starts with asking the right questions.
  • You, your board, and the community should identify the needs and opportunities impacting you most.
  • Economic development, quality of place, workforce and education, and advocacy are typically areas where you can move the needle.
  • Establish your organization's unique competencies and leadership position for pursuing the opportunity or solving the need.

Step 2: The Plan
DEVELOP A MULTI-YEAR (4-5 YEARS) PLAN OUTLINING THE RESPONSE AND SOLUTIONS
  • Convene key board members and community leaders in brainstorming/focus groups.
  • Create a strategic initiative that is ambitious and distinct from current operations and funding.
  • Focus on community outcomes and benefits.
  • Consider partnerships and collaborations with other organizations, local governments, etc.
  • Estimate costs for implementation including staff, marketing, research, lobbying, etc.
image
Step 3: Market Test
CONDUCT A FEASIBILITY ANALYSIS AND GOAL ASSESSMENT
  • Validate the proposed program as a community priority.
  • Determine the potential level of financial support.
  • Help prioritize and align program strategies, tactics, and desired outcomes.
  • Identify leaders and champions – essential to fundraising success.
  • Begin to extend the buy-in and ownership of the plan beyond a narrow group.

Step 4: Refine
REFINE THE PLAN WITH FEEDBACK FROM ASSESSMENT PHASE
  • Finalize the initiative's strategies, tactics, and targeted outcomes.
  • Sharpen budget needs to match fundraising capacity.
  • Final plan should reflect the input of key investors and community opinion leaders.
  • Ensure your top leaders, stakeholders, and volunteers are fully committed and own the plan, providing credibility and accountability to a broad constituency.

Step 5: Execute
CONDUCT A CAMPAIGN TO FUND THE INITIATIVE
  • Trust NCDS' professional counsel and our process to avoid common pitfalls.
  • Ask for the right amount.
  • Document and sell return on investment (not a “charitable donation").
  • Provide excellent investor relations, including governance, communication, engagement, and effective implementation of the multi-year plan.

"Using NCDS for our five-year economic development campaigns has been the secret to our success. Our chamber has worked with the company for eight campaigns, and we have never been disappointed in their world-class consulting services. They are consummate professionals and become an integral part of the local team from the feasibility stage through the successful launch of the strategy. Their "service after the sale" approach to what they do is a key differentiator and one of the many reasons they are so highly recommended."
